Dogsledding Tour Length: 6 days (incl. arrival & dep.)
Date: 14 - 19 Jan 2009
Price: SEK 16,300
When you arrive at Hemavan Airport in Lapland you will be greeted by us at the airport. You will be ushered to a cozy Bed & Breakfast. You will share a double-room.
We will enjoy an evening meal of traditional Swedish food, which always features local produce.
At this time you will meet our experienced guide Per, who will brief you about the next few days.
Per is a Swedish champion in long distance dog-sledding, so there's no need to worry,
you are in very safe hands. (He doesn't bite and neither do the dogs!)
Please note that you should arrive at Day 1 as this allows the team to make an early start the next morning.
It is an early rise in Lapland at 7am, with stunning wilderness just outside your doorstep. Around 8am, after a hearty breakfast, you will be transferred to the kennel where you will be able to meet all of our 50 Alaskan huskies.
Per will give you an 'Alaskan Husky' 101 and will show you just how a dogsledding kennel works. Then with his help, we will harness the dogs, pack the sledges and before you can say 'I feel like an arctic explorer', you will have your own team of 5-6 huskies!
From the kennel we travel far awhile up along one of Sweden's longest rivers, Umeåriver. We have steep clime up to one of Europe's largest Nature Reserves. A dramatic view is waiting for us.
The first overnight stop is in a cozy reindeer-guard hut situated along a small lake. The Sámi people use the hut when guarding or gathering their reindeer on the mountain. Now it is time to relax after your first mushing day. We will enjoy a nice dinner by the fire and a good night's sleep.
Distance: 30 km (18.64 miles) Altitude: 750 m above sea level (2,460 feet)
A new adventure with the dogs is waiting for you just outside your door. Today's trip takes us through a beautiful narrow u-shaped valley with majestic mountains on either side. We will sled along a frozen creek down towards a valley, we where will pass a reindeer paddock, used in the summer time.
Tonight will be spent in a beautiful hut, situated on the edge of a frozen lake, Tärnasjön. The lake offers trout and arctic chard so perhaps you will try your luck fishing here. Keep your eyes open because the King of Sweden has also been known to cast his line into these waters!
Tonight there is another special treat. You will be able to experience an authentic Swedish sauna (something about the sauna)
Distance: 30 km (18.64 miles) a pat on the back.
Spectacular scenery awaits us today! After travelling back along the frozen lake we will divert our route and enter the valley. Just notice how different the landscape looks when travelling from this direction.
Sharp mountain ranges encompass us all around, and the view allows us to see glaciers and the highest mountain peak in the area.
This is some of the best preserved wilderness in Europe, so get your camera's out otherwise your friends just might not believe you.
Our last night on the mountain will be spent in a very beautiful hut situated beside the largest mountain peak in the area. The hut, Syterstugan was built in 1923, so there's no 'Ikea' to be found. In fact, in 1993 archaeologists found a stone-age settlement around 8000 years old, very close to the hut!
Distance: 28 km (17.4 miles) and another pat on the back.
Wake up to the magnificent sight of beautiful glaciers and the mountainous peaks in front of you. Today we will be traveling along the famous trekking route - the Royal Trail. We will see a variety of differing sceneries including an alpine heath, u-shaped valley's and steep mountain ridges. And then hang on, because it is all down hill from now on!
We leave the mountains and enter the mystical birch forest, before arriving safely back at the kennel. Your last night in Lapland will be spent with sleddog team and your overnight stay will be in the mountain Bed & Breakfast. A shower and sauna awaits a well deserved adventurer.
Tonight will be spent feasting, resting and congratulating ourselves on new found life survival skills.
Distance: 30 km (18.6 miles )
After enjoying your breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to the dogsledding teams, your guide and Lapland. We will arrange transport to the airport and will wish you luck on your next journey.
