Dogsledding Tour Length: 8 days (incl. arrival & dep.)
Date: 19 - 26 Feb 2009
Price: SEK 18,500
When you arrive at Hemavan airport you will be greeted by a member of the Nova Arctic team. You will be ushered to a Bed & Breakfast. We will enjoy an evening meal of traditional Swedish food, which always features local produce.
At this time you will meet our experienced guide Per, who will brief you about the next few days. Per is a Swedish champion in long distance dog-sledding, so there's no need to worry, you are in very safe hands. (He doesn't bite and neither do the dogs!)
Please note that you should arrive at Day 1 as this allows the team to make an early start the next morning.
It is an early rise in Lapland at 7am, with stunning wilderness just outside your doorstep. Around 8am, after a hearty breakfast, you will be transferred to the kennel where you will be able to meet all of our 40 Alaskan huskies.
Per will give you an 'Alaskan Husky' 101 and will show you just how a dog sled kennel works. Then with his help, we will harness the dogs, pack the sledges and before you can say 'I feel like an artic explorer', you will have your own team of 5-6 huskies!
From the kennel we travel up along one of Sweden's longest rivers, Umeälven. We then travel across a large lake and onto the Blue Road. We will travel through birch forest which climbs up to one of Europe's largest nature reserves. A dramatic view is waiting for us.
The first overnight stop is in a cosy reindeer-guard hut situated along a small lake. The Sami people use the hut when guarding or gathering their reindeers on the mountain.
Now it is time to pat yourself on your back and relax after your first mushing day. We will enjoy a nice dinner by the fire and a good nights sleep.
Distance: 30 km (18.64 miles) Height: 750 m above sea level (2460 feet)
A new adventure with the dogs is waiting for you just outside your door. Today's trip takes us through a beautiful narrow u-shaped valley with majestic mountains on either side.
We will sled along a frozen creek down towards a valley, we where will pass a reindeer paddock, used in the summer to gather reindeers. We stop for a well deserved lunch at a small hut called Skidbäcks-stugan. Here we have the special treat of viewing virgin birch forest above the hut; wilderness in its truest sense, is greeting us.
Across the valley on your left hand side a remarkable story took place here in 1955. A hunter called Evert Stenmark was buried under an avalanche for 8 days. He was saved by a cinema ticket he has found in his pocket. He managed somehow to put it on a stick and poke it through the snow. Amazingly it was noticed by the rescue team.
Tonight we will be staying in a hut beside Dalavardo, or 'lonely mountain'. There is something magical about his place, perhaps the remoteness and unending quiet, unspoiled wilderness. And lack of McDonalds.
Today we will be traveling along a historical route used by settlers who traveled to Norway to trade goods.
We follow the river down stream towards Ammarnäs river, which is one of the few rivers in Sweden which is not regulated. The source of the river starts at the Norwegian border and ends at the Baltic sea. A great place for catching peak, salmon and trout. Shortly after that, we arrive at Sweden's steepest mountain, so grab your camera and record some spectacular topography.
Our next overnight stop is Ammarnäs, a mountain village situated in the heart of a nature reserve. Tonight Per will tell us about the unique settler and Sami culture which surrounds us here.
Distance: 50 km (31 miles)
Today we leave the little mountain village and head west.
We travel though the birch forest and with a steady rise of 400 meter (1312 feet ) until we are in the bare mountains. Once on the mountain we have beautiful view of the whole mountain ranges Ammarnäsfjället and Norra Storfjället.
We follow the track down the mountain until we meet the birch forest and here we come a cross Lapland's own miniature Niagara fall (frozen) which we cross over via a bridge.
After lunch we follow the mountain range until we researched today's overnight stop.
Distance: 22 km (13.67 miles)
Today we will be able to relax and take in the sensational scenery that abounds. We shall spend the day in and around our beautiful hut, situated on the edge of a frozen lake. The lake offers trout and arctic chard so perhaps you will try your luck fishing here. Keep your eyes open because the King of Sweden has also been known to cast his line into these waters!
Tonight there is another special treat. You will be able to experience an authentic Swedish sauna (something about the sauna)
Today we sled our way across the lake and down the exciting archipelago. From there we continue down the famous walking track, the Royal Trail. Todays views will offer us the possibility to view the highest peaks in the area such as Norra Sytertoppen (1768 m).
Lunch will take place in one of the huts on our way towards Hemavan and the kennel. A shower and sauna awaits a well deserved adventurer and dinner at the restaurant Sånninggarden at your B&B.
Distance: 30 km (18.4 miles)
After enjoying your breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to the dog sled teams, your guide and Lapland. We will arrange transport to the airport and will wish you luck on your next journey
